Glossary of VoIP Terms

A call which uses special software and/or hardware to be placed over the Internet instead of the traditional telephone networks. These calls can be made or received using your computer or other internet enabled device, notably, a Nokia device. Gizmo VoIP is software that is integrated with supported Nokia phones to allow you to make Internet calls using your handset when a wifi connection is available. Internet calls are often less expensive than landline or cellular calls.

To make and receive calls over the Internet on your Nokia phone you need special software. SIPphone Inc. provides this software which is called Gizmo VoIP. Gizmo VoIP is part of a larger service called Gizmo Project, and is designed specifically for Nokia mobile devices.

Glossary

Internet Call: A call which uses special software and/or hardware to be placed over the Internet instead of the traditional telephone networks. These calls can be made or received using your computer or other internet enabled device, notably the Nokia N80. Gizmo VoIP is software that is integrated with the Nokia N80 to allow you to make Internet calls using your handset when a wifi connection is available. Internet calls are often less expensive than landline or cellular calls.

PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network): The PSTN is the means by which most landline telephone calls are routed. It is the collection of interconnected systems operated by the various telephone companies and administrations around the world. The PSTN is also known as the Plain Old Telephone System (POTS).

Cellular Network: This is the network by which most mobile phone calls travel. It is a radio network consisting of a number of radio cells and transmitters. These are used to cover different areas in order to provide radio coverage over a wider area than the area of one cell.

Gizmo Project: A peer-to-peer VoIP calling network created by SIPphone, a Michael Robertson company. The Gizmo Project network uses open SIP standards for call management unlike some of its competitors. This means other companies that create or support SIP-based calling can make and receive calls from Gizmo Project users. Gizmo Project was originally created to run as a desktop client so users could make Internet calls from their PCs. Today, Gizmo Project can be used on many different types of Internet enabled devices, including Nokia phones. On these Nokia devices, Gizmo Project is referred to as Gimzo VoIP. Gizmo VoIP: Gizmo VoIP is software that allows Internet calls to and from Nokia phones using the Gizmo Project network. Gizmo VoIP has been tailored to work seamlessly with the Nokia user interface and is complimented by www.gizmovoip.com which contains a site designed specifically for viewing on Nokia phones (buy call out credit, edit your profile, view Gizmo contacts all from your phone), and an information site (which you are on right now).

SIP: SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol and is a set of rules that govern the format of the coded messages which are exchanged during an Internet call. SIP is the most popular VoIP standard because it is an open standard. Gizmo Project and therefore Gimzo VoIP are based on SIP.

SIP Number: Your Gizmo account has two important identifiers. The first is your Gizmo user ID. The second is the SIP number, which is automatically assigned to your account and begins with 1-747. With this number anyone calling from a SIP-based network can reach your Gizmo account for free. SIP numbers can only be called via the Internet, so if someone tries to call your SIP number from the PSTN it will not connect. Of course, other Nokia users can call your phone using this number, as long as they do so over the Internet. Plug In: A plug in is a computer program which interacts with the main application, such as the software on your Nokia device, in order to provide a particular function. Gimzo VoIP is considered a plug in because you download the software onto the phone and it interacts with the existing phone software to provide you with VoIP functionality.

Gizmo Call In: A Gizmo Call In number allows Gizmo users to receive phone calls from regular landlines and mobile phones. For just a low monthly or annual fee you can purchase a Call In number with an area code from around the US, France, UK, and Spain (with more countries coming soon.) The person making the phone call gets billed as if they were making a call to the area code of your Call In number. Gizmo Call Out: When Gizmo users wish to call their friends and family on their cell phones or a landline, Call Out credits are used. Call Out credits are cheap and accessible making it easy to get a hold of your loved ones no matter where they are in the world. Gizmo Area 775: Area 775 allows users to get a free U.S based telephone number which is assigned to their computer and also assigned to any phone of their choice.For a small monthly fee users can choose from a list of 775 numbers, including other area codes. VoIP: VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, and refers to the routing of voice calls over the Internet (or other IP-based network). You may have heard VoIP also referred to as IP telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, or Voice over Broadband.
